I take 2 tall scratching posts and there'south nearly no carpet left since my 4 cats have kneaded the heck out of the posts!

I have been thinking of replacing the old rug with new carpet or sisal rope merely am not sure how...

I think I tin cut the carpet off simply am not sure HOW to put the new carpeting or sisal rope on...

Do I use staple gun?? I am afraid that'll be dangerous because what if a cat kneading the carpet/sisal rope pulls the staple out by accident and impales his/her hand on information technology??

What would u guys recommend? I think it's a waste to go out and buy a new post since the wood is still practiced-it'due south only the rug that'southward destroyed..

Pamela,

As someone who builds cat article of furniture for a living, I tin can tell y'all that sisal rope is the fashion to get. You could utilise rug, just unless you accept an air compressor and a tool for shooting pneumatic staples, regular staples won't work well. Your correct, regular staples are too wide and can be pulled out.

Dwelling house Depot sells sisal rope that is 3/viii" thick for about v-6 dollars for a 50 foot roll. It volition last far longer than carpet. If you can find it, 1/2" thick sisal is the best surface. Even so, its not as easy to find as iii/8". My visitor uses it, merely we buy it from a industrial supplier that only sells in 1200 foot spools.

Is the post circular or foursquare ?

Home Depot by me has 50 foot of three/8 inch sisal for $four.44 (I've bought a lot of information technology in that location lately). I'd like to hear other ideas, as we are about to replace our rug with sisal. The last time we did sisal, we drilled a hole in the wood the width of the rope, squeezed in mucilage, pushed in the rope, and nailed it in place. We wrapped from acme to bottom, then repeated securing it with hole/glue/nail at the bottom. Thus far they have non come up loose.

Any other ideas???

Momofmany,

what kind of glue did u use? Drilling a hole in the woods will be a problem for me because I don't accept any power tools.. I have a hammer, a small staple gun I apply to staple cords to woods trimming, elmer gum, screwdrivers..

U can tell I don't have a lot of equipment to work with!

Ahhh...you have a hammer. Good. They sell large staples as well at abode depot that are big enough to fit around 3/8" thick sisal rope. These staples have a flat top and are meant to exist put in using a hammer. I think they are one or two inch staples. You lot could use them to start and finish your rope wrapping.

Since you have a foursquare post, you can push the rope down as you lot wrap it by pressing it aganist a hard surface. (like the floor). You volition get a tighter wrap this style.

You tin also use gum, Just, make sure y'all stick to non-toxic kinds. Elmers wood glues, and all purpose glues piece of work well especially since your posts are made of wood. DO Non Employ Whatever FORM OF CONTACT CEMET OR ADHESIVES. They contain harmful chemicals that could hurt your true cat.

I promise this helps.

I used wood glue, which helped seal the ends and then they don't unravel, simply I wouldn't depend on the glue solitary. Even if you only use the large staples, suggest y'all put something on the terminate of the rope to prevent fraying.

Oh....yes....I near forgot. You can continue the ends from fraying past wrapping them with masking record. And then anchor them to the postal service with the large staples.

We put rope on the ii we fabricated and information technology's holding fine. We used a nail with a head and only pounded it into the rope an inch or then from the end, then wrapped the offset circular of rope effectually it to comprehend the stop, with no gum or anything. I start at the bottom of the postal service and after three or four wraps I tap downward on the top of the rope stack to pack it down tight. I didn't do it on the get-go one and it's looser.

I would caution against buying your sisal rope from Abode Depot or the like. Amidst other reasons, these bundles of rope tin actually be either quite onetime and dry rotted ( having been shuffled from warehouse to warehouse for years ), or too heavily oiled. Regardless of what cat many furniture vendors may assure you ( when they really have no basis to do so), ALL sisal rope has some oil in it. This is simply considering it is needed in the manufacturing process. These raw agave fibers are fashioned into strands, and then these strands need to run at relatively high speeds on machines in the sisal mills ( factories ). In that location simply needs to be at least SOME oil for these purposes. But since larger quantities of this rope are sold by the POUND, one way to increase the weight per whatsoever given length is to OVER-OIL it. I've seen a LOT of greasy sisal rope & it went correct back to the supplier. As another manufacturer of cat furniture (over 30 years as of 2016), I encourage you to seek out a company like mine that volition sell a portion of their rope. Endeavor doing a search on the following term: "sisal ropeoffer". That should turn up a couple of skilful possibilities. Every bit for attaching this rope, you might read an eBay guide meant to help people doing these things. Search on this term: (cat tree tips cat homo). You'll discover several useful articles.
